Ajit Pawar takes oath as Maharashtra Deputy CM in massive jolt to MVA

In a surprising turn of events, Ajit Pawar, who was the Leader of the Opposition, has taken oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. This move comes as a massive jolt to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance and its leader, Sharad Pawar. Ajit Pawar’s decision to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has caused a significant setback to the MVA government in Maharashtra.

The Upset within NCP

Ajit Pawar, who had aspirations of attaining the top post in the party, was disappointed by Sharad Pawar’s actions. Feeling disheartened and without receiving a favorable response from Sharad Pawar, Ajit Pawar offered his resignation as the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra.

The Oath-taking Ceremony

Amidst the political turmoil, Ajit Pawar joined the NDA and took oath as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Additionally, NCP heavyweight Chhagan Bhujbal and several other NCP members were sworn in as ministers in the Shinde government. Dilip Walse, a former home minister of Maharashtra, was among those who took oath as ministers.

The NCP Split and Congress’ Role

Sources from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claim that the split within the NCP would not have been possible without the knowledge of Sharad Pawar himself. These sources also suggest that the high-handedness of the Congress party played a role in the NCP’s division. The split within the NCP poses a significant challenge to the unity of the opposition parties, especially with the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

Impact on the Elections

The divide in the NCP’s vote share due to the split is expected to have a detrimental effect on the alliance between the Congress party, Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena, and Sharad Pawar’s NCP. Maharashtra, with its 48 Lok Sabha seats, is the second-largest state after Uttar Pradesh. In the previous Lok Sabha elections, the BJP and Shiv Sena won 41 out of 48 seats. The combined strength of the Congress, Sena, and NCP would have posed a challenge for the BJP in the next election. However, with the split within the NCP, the political landscape has changed significantly.

Ajit Pawar’s Discontentment

Ajit Pawar’s decision to align with the NDA stems from his discontentment with the top leadership of the NCP. Speculations were rife that Ajit Pawar might leave the NCP, especially after Sharad Pawar appointed Supriya Sule and Praful Patel as working presidents of the party. Ajit Pawar, who aspired for the top post in the party, did not receive a favorable response from Sharad Pawar, which further fueled his dissatisfaction.

Support for the NDA Government

The majority of the NCP is expected to join the NDA, and Ajit Pawar’s role will be determined by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who will be responsible for distributing the portfolios.

Description : Ajit Pawar’s swearing-in as Maharashtra Deputy CM dealt a massive blow to the MVA alliance. His decision to join the NDA came as a surprise, leading to a split in the NCP. The ceremony witnessed the presence of top political leaders, signaling a significant shift in the state’s political landscape. The division in the NCP’s vote share will impact the upcoming elections, posing challenges for the opposition. Ajit Pawar’s discontentment with the NCP leadership fueled his move. The NDA government is expected to receive support from a majority of the NCP members, with Ajit Pawar’s role to be determined by CM Eknath Shinde.
