Reliance Jio has recently unveiled the Jio Bharat Phone, a new offering aimed at providing affordable internet-enabled phones to feature phone users. Priced at Rs 999, the Jio Bharat Phone targets the vast user base of 250 million feature phone users in India, offering them access to internet-enabled services.
Alongside Reliance Retail, other phone brands, starting with Karbonn, will adopt the Jio Bharat platform to develop Jio Bharat phones. In collaboration with Karbonn, Reliance Jio is launching the first two Jio Bharat phones.
To kickstart the initiative, a beta trial for the first one million Jio Bharat phones will commence on July 7. This trial will cover 6,500 tehsils, with a focus on upgrading feature phone users and equipping them with internet-enabled devices.
In terms of pricing plans, the Jio Bharat Phone plan is available for just Rs 123 per month. Users will enjoy unlimited voice calls and 14 GB of data (0.5GB per day). Reliance Jio claims that this plan is 30% cheaper than monthly plans offered by other operators and provides 7 times more data.
Additionally, Reliance Jio is offering annual plans for Jio Bharat Phone users. For Rs 1,234, users can purchase an annual plan that includes a total of 168GB of data (0.5GB per day) along with unlimited calling.
Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio, emphasized the mission behind the Jio Bharat Phone, stating that there are still 250 million mobile phone users in India who are stuck in the 2G era, unable to access basic internet features in a time when the world is on the verge of a 5G revolution.
He further added, “When Jio was launched six years ago, we pledged to democratize the internet and extend the benefits of technology to every Indian. Technology should not be a privilege limited to a few. The new Jio Bharat Phone is another step in that direction. It represents innovation and showcases our commitment to delivering significant and genuine value to different user segments through meaningful real-life use cases.”
The launch of the Jio Bharat Phone signifies Reliance Jio’s efforts to bridge the digital divide and empower feature phone users with affordable internet-enabled devices. With its affordable pricing plans and the wide reach of its beta trial, Jio aims to revolutionize the mobile phone landscape in India and provide users with access to the benefits of the internet.
