Threads: Instagram's Alternative to Twitter

Threads is Instagram’s microblogging platform which is unabashedly inspired by Twitter, so much so, that it has been dramatically nicknamed as the “Twitter Killer.” As the pioneer in the microblogging space, Twitter has been dogged by controversies, Meta hopes to cash in on this opportunity to provide an alternative that is “sanely moderated.”

In the world of social media, Instagram has introduced a new platform called Threads, which aims to compete with Twitter’s microblogging dominance. This article explores the features of Threads, its successful launch, privacy concerns, comparison with Twitter, and the European Union’s stance on the platform.

Features of Threads

Described as a conversations app by Instagram, Threads allows users to create text-based posts with up to 500 characters, as well as share photos and videos up to five minutes long. The app’s interface resembles Twitter, with a minimal design and options to like, comment, repost, and share threads.

How to download and install Threads

Threads is available on both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Users can log into the platform from their desktop browsers and mobile devices. To download the app, users can simply type “threads” on the Instagram search bar, which leads them to a customisable ticket that includes a QR code. This ticket redirects users to Threads’ official website or the app store, allowing them to download and sign up seamlessly.

Threads’ Successful Launch

Threads has made an impressive debut in terms of user adoption. On the first day of its launch, the platform attracted over 10 million users within the first seven hours. This achievement is noteworthy, considering other popular platforms like Clubhouse and Mastodon took years to reach the same user count.

Instagram’s Massive User Base

Threads leverages Instagram’s colossal user base of over 2.35 billion active users. Existing Instagram users can effortlessly transfer their username and other details to Threads. However, there is a catch. Once users create a Threads profile, they cannot delete it without deleting their Instagram profile as well. While users can deactivate their Threads profile, their data remains on the Threads server.

Privacy Concerns and Data Sharing

Threads collects sensitive user information to profile their digital activity, including health and financial data, precise location, browsing history, contacts, and search history. This raises valid privacy concerns, especially considering Meta’s track record in safeguarding user privacy. However, it’s worth noting that Twitter also collects similar data, albeit with some differences related to finance.

Comparison with Twitter

Threads offers a cleaner and smoother version of Twitter, providing a breath of fresh air for users tired of Twitter’s clunky interface. Meta has replicated Twitter’s popular functionalities successfully, including likes, retweets, and following. However, Threads lacks certain features such as hashtags, trending lists, and Twitter spaces (inspired by Clubhouse).

The European Union’s Stance on Threads

As of now, Threads has not launched in the European Union. Meta is navigating the regulatory landscape to determine how data sharing between Threads and Instagram will be governed. The company is awaiting further guidance regarding the Digital Markets Act, new EU competition rules aimed at preventing tech companies from
